Sights and Fragrances of May!

May 2011: If I had to choose a month to be my favorite, it would be May.  Spring is in full bloom now.  Color pleases the eye and the air is heavy with lovely fragrances.  Flowering trees, lilacs, freshly mown grass!  There is nothing sweeter than the colors and smells of May!

The most fragrant Pansies I've ever experienced.
I didn't even know Pansies had a scent!

A Day in Central Park

May 1, 2011:  We went to Manhattan and met up with some of Bob's Bayview friends at the entrance to Central Park at 59th Street and Central Park South.  We walked around for a while, and then sat in Sheep Meadow for a while longer.  I'd forgotten all the crazy and wonderful things going on in Central Park.  Here are but a few of the things we saw:

Making like Lady Liberty

Making like a silver statue

 Making like a gold statue

A very young street entertainer

Flute Player

And aside from all the entertainment, there were thousands of people just out and about on a beautiful spring day!   They were doing all sorts of things...

Climbing on rocks ...

Standing around ...

Hanging with friends...

Having lunch and catching up ...

Reminiscing about the past ...

It was a very good day to be outside, enjoying the city sights and resources!

Using a little train time to catch a nap!

April 2011: The Colors of Spring

April came in rainy and raw.  But despite the unseasonable cold, the spring flowers are starting to blossom.  I spotted this hyacinth in full bloom on April 1st:

April 3rd: More blooms spotted on a walk around the neighborhood...here is a forsythia:

Hyacinth blossoms, full-frame:

More forsythia:

Creeping Speedwell, a tiny creeping plant in the grass, is blooming profusely in the park right now.  I got right down on the ground on my belly to get these closeup shots!

Another shot of the same catkins, originally posted on 3/19.  They are progressing slowly - much more slowly than normal, it seems - perhaps because of our colder than seasonal temps this spring!

First blooms of a Star Magnolia in Flushing Meadow Park:

Same catkins, closer shot in different lighting:

Every day (finally!) I am seeing more and more signs of spring - willow leaves emerging:

Cherry Blossoms:

Despite the cool, wet weather, spring has sprung in all it's glorious colors!

March 2011: Signs of Spring

March came in like a lamb, and with it came some signs of spring; just enough to keep us hopeful that spring will indeed arrive on time this year!

March 1st
gave rise to the very first, and much anticipated, sign of spring:
Crocus!

... and also some daffodils and tulips starting to emerge!

On my birthday, March 16th, spring was becoming bloomin' evident on my block!

Abundant Purple Crocus:

And yellow ones too!

A walk around the neighborhood on Saturday, March 19th uncovered many more signs of spring, that made me happy indeed!

I looked hard to find a magnolia bud nearly ready to burst:

It was not so hard to find a stereotypical robin!

This saucy early daffodil was a welcome surprise:

There was new green growth
on some bushes in the park:

The local waterfowl were swimming in pairs
on the pond, including this odd couple!

Male Redwing Blackbirds were puffed up
and singing their hearts out to potential mates!

Cong-a-leeee!

Pussy Willows reached for the blue sky!

Turtles were awake and sunning!

Then March 23d & 24th brought thunderstorms, hail and more snow to us!  All our joyful signs of spring were blanketed in the despicable white stuff:

Crocus covered in snow:

This poor cold dove was sitting
among snow-covered dogwood buds:

One more week in March to go!  Will spring ever show??

March 28th:  Well, the snow has melted, but temps remain unseasonably cold - with many mornings below freezing!  Let's hope that April will be better!

This dove is puffed up against the cold, but at least there is no snow on the branches!
